What the limit involves
From 1 June to 30 September 2026, a maximum of 17,668 non-resident vehicles may be on the island each day: 14,000 rental cars, 3,548 tourist vehicles and 120 vehicles belonging to Formentera residents. Enforcement uses number plate recognition. The official portal is ibizacircular.es.

Does this apply to my rental car
If you rent in Ibiza, you do not have to apply for anything yourself and you pay no separate permit fee. The rental companies arrange authorisation within their own quota. The practical consequence is scarcity in July and August.

Bringing your own car: permit and cost
If you bring your own car over on the ferry, you need a permit. It costs €1 per day, capped at €5 per stay, through ibizacircular.es. Some return tickets include it automatically; check when you book.

Exemptions
Vehicles registered to an address in Ibiza, emergency services and freight transport are among those exempt. Zero-emission vehicles still have to be registered. Motorcycles and mopeds need to do nothing.

Fines
Driving without valid authorisation can cost €300 to €1,000. Serious offences range from €1,001 to €10,000 and very serious ones up to €30,000, with the vehicle possibly impounded.

What this means for prices
The smaller fleet pushed summer rates up sharply and cars now sell out at times. Do not wait until you arrive, certainly not in August.
